چکیده

As for the means, morphine in quickly cumulative doses is one of the best. Insulin produces unconsciousness easily; as little as 40 units may be fatal to a cachectic patient, while others need much more. Venesection is unreliable. Relatives should be warned that the patient is worse, and is reaching unconsciousness rapidly. One other point about such treatmentthe doctor should always give the drug himself, for he takes the direct responsibility in that way." The book is easy and pleasing to read, and unique in its coverage of important and neglected subjects.

Physiological refugia: swamps, hypoxia tolerance and maintenance of fish diversity in the Lake Victoria region.

In Lake Nabugabo, Uganda, a satellite of Lake Victoria, approximately 50% of the indigenous fishes disappeared from the open waters subsequent to the establishment of the introduced predatory Nile perch, Lates niloticus. This pattern is similar to the faunal loss experienced in the much larger Lake Victoria. Several of these species persisted in wetland refugia (e.g. ecotonal wetlands, swamp la...

Morphological and functional characteristics of the kidney of cartilaginous fishes: with special reference to urea reabsorption.

For adaptation to high-salinity marine environments, cartilaginous fishes (sharks, skates, rays, and chimaeras) adopt a unique urea-based osmoregulation strategy. Their kidneys reabsorb nearly all filtered urea from the primary urine, and this is an essential component of urea retention in their body fluid. Anatomical investigations have revealed the extraordinarily elaborate nephron system in ...

The importance of sound effect assessment in the Iranian freshwater endemic fishes

Endemic fishes are part of the genetic resources in aquatic habitats. The Caspian Sea, as the largest lake in the world, has a unique habitat diversity and is of great importance for the countries of the region. Over the recent decades, with the increase in the level of anthropogenic sound, its effects on freshwater and marine fishes have been considered by fisheries managers and stakeholders. ...

Olfactory morphology and physiology of elasmobranchs.

Elasmobranch fishes are thought to possess greater olfactory sensitivities than teleost fishes due in part to the large amount of epithelial surface area that comprises their olfactory organs; however, direct evidence correlating the size of the olfactory organ to olfactory sensitivity is lacking. This study examined the olfactory morphology and physiology of five distantly related elasmobranch...

Extinction selectivity among marine fishes during multistressor global change in the end-Permian and end-Triassic crises

Ancient mass extinction events such as the end-Permian and endTriassic crises provide analogues for multistressor global change of ocean warming, pH reduction, and deoxygenation. Organism physiology is hypothesized to be a key trait influencing vulnerability to these stressors, but it is not certain how physiology predicts survival over evolutionary time scales and when organisms are faced with...

The Physiology of the Respiration of Fishes in Relation to the Hydrogen Ion Concentration of the Medium

1. The ability of marine fishes to absorb oxygen at low tension from the sea water is more or less dependent upon the hydrogen ion concentration of the water. 2. The ability of fishes to withstand wide variations in the range of hydrogen ion concentration of the sea water can be correlated with their habitats. The fishes that are most resistant to a wide variation in the hydrogen ion concentrat...
